State of the Art

Art is woven into the fabric of the Castlemaine region, where a rich creative heritage continues to inspire visitors to discover excellent galleries, remarkable artists and ever-changing exhibitions throughout Central Victoria.

Art at the Heart of Castlemaine

The Castlemaine region has long attracted painters, sculptors, writers, ceramicists, jewellers and makers who have been inspired by its striking landscapes, rich history and vibrant community. Over generations they have shaped the area’s distinctive creative identity, and today that spirit continues to flourish in noted galleries, artist-run spaces, studios and community exhibitions that invite visitors to slow down, explore and connect with local creativity.

The Castlemaine Art Museum is one of regional Victoria’s most respected public galleries, housing an outstanding collection of Australian art alongside changing exhibitions that showcase both established and emerging artists. The striking Art Deco building is a destination, celebrating the region’s artistic legacy and embracing contemporary practice.

Lot 19 has become one of Castlemaine’s most exciting creative precincts. Set on a three-acre property just a couple of minutes from the heart of town, it is home to 21 artists’ studios, a contemporary gallery, outdoor sculpture park, outdoor stages, events and creative businesses, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the region’s thriving artistic community.

For those looking to discover local makers, The Artpuff presents a thoughtfully curated collection of original works, ceramics, jewellery, textiles and handcrafted pieces by regional artists.

Throughout the year, the Market Building in Castlemaine hosts free seasonal exhibitions featuring local artists and community groups.  With exhibitions changing regularly, there’s always something new to discover.

Gabirra First Nations Artist Gallery and Studio in the centre of Castlemaine showcases local Indigenous art.

Art in Castlemaine isn’t confined to gallery walls. Throughout the town you’ll discover striking public artworks that are free to enjoy, adding another layer to the region’s rich creative landscape. In the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens, Wildflowers is a beautiful new permanent installation by Castlemaine artist Laura Woodward that celebrates the seven visionary women who helped establish the Castlemaine Art Museum more than a century ago.

At The Mill, colourful large-scale murals transform historic industrial walls into an ever-evolving outdoor gallery, rewarding visitors who take the time to wander, explore and look a little closer.

Just a short drive from Castlemaine, the Newstead Arts Hub has transformed a former railway station into a vibrant cultural space where galleries, workshops, performances and creative events celebrate the talents of local artists while welcoming visitors to become part of the experience.

In the beautifully preserved historic town of Maldon, the Cascade Art Gallery showcases an impressive range of contemporary works by regional artists in an elegant heritage setting. Nearby, the Maldon Artists Network Gallery features an ever-changing collection of paintings, photography, sculpture, jewellery and mixed media, making every visit a little different from the last.

For those exploring a little further, the renowned Convent Gallery Daylesford is well worth the journey. Housed within a magnificent 19th-century convent overlooking Wombat Hill, the gallery presents significant exhibitions across multiple floors, complemented by sculpture gardens, a museum and panoramic views.

Keep an eye out for open studio festivals and programmes, art trails and occasional private viewings at the studios and homes of the region’s working artists. It’s these unexpected opportunities to meet the makers and experience their work firsthand that make exploring the Castlemaine region so rewarding.
