Car-Free Getaways

Come and Enjoy a Car-Free Castlemaine Getaway.

What if your next holiday didn’t involve petrol prices blowing the budget before you’ve even left home, along with traffic snarls and time behind the wheel?

We’re just a 90-minute V-Line train ride from Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station, followed by an easy 10 to 15-minute walk from Castlemaine Station. Once you’re here, you’ll find you don’t miss the car at all.

At BIG4 Castlemaine Gardens Holiday Park, a car-free holiday is easy and fun.

Step Straight Into Nature

Right next door to the park is one of Castlemaine’s most special places: the beautiful Castlemaine Botanical Gardens and adjoining nature reserve.

Covering 25 hectares, this is your backyard for the duration of your stay. It offers wide open lawns, level walking paths, towering heritage trees, birdlife, bush trails, peaceful lake views and plenty of space to wander, cycle, picnic or simply sit and take it all in.

The Mill Complex: Everything You Need, Just Across the Road

Planning a picnic? Directly opposite the park is Castlemaine’s famous Mill Complex, a vibrant artisan precinct housed in a repurposed historic woollen mill. It attracts visitors from far and wide and makes car-free holidaying easy.

Here you’ll find everything you need to put together a perfect picnic or an easy meal back at the park, including artisan breads, great coffee, organic smallgoods, fresh produce, cheeses and handcrafted chocolates.

It’s also home to the vast Castlemaine Vintage Bazaar, with 2,000 square metres of eclectic vintage treasures, the Viennese-inspired Das Kaffeehaus serving breakfast and lunch daily, and the Taproom at Shedshaker Brewing, where you can enjoy a relaxed meal and a standout local beer.

Explore the Town Centre on Foot

Castlemaine is made for wandering.

Walk into town, about 20 minutes at a leisurely pace, and you’ll find a centre full of character, creativity and history. Mostyn Street and the surrounding blocks are the heart of it all, with boutiques, galleries, relaxed cafés, supermarkets and pharmacies all within easy reach.

Make time to visit the historic Castlemaine Market Building, home to the Visitor Information Centre. It’s a great place to get your bearings, learn more about the region’s rich Goldfields history and discover what’s on during your stay. While you’re there, take in the award-winning Boorp Boorp Boondyil exhibition space, which shares the story of the Dja Dja Wurrung people, the Traditional Owners of this Country.

A little further along, the Castlemaine Art Museum is always worth a visit, with thoughtfully curated exhibitions that blend contemporary works with pieces from its significant historical collection.

Also in the town precinct is the iconic Theatre Royal. Established in 1854, it is one of the oldest continuously operating theatres in the southern hemisphere and now serves as a much-loved cinema, live music venue, bar and pizzeria.

Car-Free Dining Options

You don’t need a car to enjoy some great dining experiences showcasing local and regional produce and beverages.

Back at the Mill, the Taproom serves lunch and dinner seven days a week, while Boomtown Winery and Bistro offers wine tastings and lunch and dinner from Friday to Sunday. A short walk away, the Bridge Hotel serves up quality pub classics with a warm country welcome.

For a special occasion, the hatted Bar Midland opposite the Castlemaine Railway Station features set menus inspired by the best seasonal local and regional produce.

In town, enjoy a burger or snack, along with more great beer, at Love Shack Brewing, or visit Bar Andino Restaurant for Latin American-inspired dining from Wednesday to Saturday. Two wine bars, Mostyn Street Cellars and Grafting Cellars, offer tasting plates to accompany their wine selections.

And everywhere you go, you’ll find a coffee window or café serving excellent coffee, with local favourites including Saffs and Togs.

A Train Ride of a Different Kind

For a memorable holiday experience, take the Victorian Goldfields Railway heritage steam train from Castlemaine train station to nearby historic Maldon, designated Australia’s first Notable Town by the National Trust.

Enjoy the stunning scenery along the way, explore Maldon’s beautifully preserved Goldfields-era streets, browse the shops and antique stores and settle in for a classic pub lunch before the return journey. It’s a delightful immersion in a bygone era.

Venture Further Afield

One of the joys of a car-free stay is how easy it is to explore beyond Castlemaine.

Jump back on the V-Line train and within 25 minutes you’ll arrive in Bendigo, one of Victoria’s great regional cities. Here you can admire grand historic architecture, stroll through Rosalind Park and enjoy an impressive food scene.

Head in the other direction and you’ll reach Kyneton, a charming village known for its food culture and heritage streetscapes. From the station, it’s an easy walk or short bus ride to Piper Street, where you’ll find destination dining, specialty stores and the perfect setting for a long, relaxed lunch.

Wonderful place to stay. We have stayed here more than a dozen times over more than 15 years and can honestly say that it's probably one of our favorite parks. The layout is superb, it's close to the Botanic Gardens, the Mill and some great pubs. The staff are always friendly; the park is always clean and has plenty of activities. It's a hidden gem and one we will just keep coming back to in all seasons. Credit to the owners past and present it's a pleasure to visit.

Our stay at Big 4 Castlemaine was very good, our cabin was spotless and nicely prepared, it is in a great location and considering the terrible weather our cabin was very cosy and had all the facilities we needed for an enjoyable stay, we’ll definitely stay again
